We hope you’ll consider Ethos Veterinary Health for your veterinary student externship!
Veterinary Student Externships are available at several of our hospitals. We encourage you to consider your options and apply for the departments you are most interested in. Depending on your location, you may choose to do an externship for credit, or take the opportunity to meet doctors and check out our culture. We welcome your visit and are enthusiastic about helping you maximize your learning opportunities.
What to Expect
Externships are available to veterinary students in their third or fourth year of school. Student externs gain experience working in a specialty department of a high-volume referral hospital. Externs will work under the supervision of a specialist and closely with the technicians. You will have opportunities to observe outpatient receiving, emergency case management, hospital treatments, surgery, diagnostic procedures and client communications. Our student externship program is designed to be more observational than hands-on, you will not be performing surgery, or receiving patients nor will you have primary responsibility for treatments, although you will assist in these and many other activities, depending on your experience and the rotation.
Responsibilities may vary by hospital and department, but may include participating in rounds, patient treatments and diagnostics, and (when applicable) educational department meetings, as well as observing client interactions and learning about case management and the workings of a multi-department hospital. Externs actively participate in daily hospital rounds and case discussions. We want to hear your thoughts and questions about cases and appreciate your perspective.
Hospitals have an on-site library of textbooks and access to current journal articles on line as well. We strongly encourage you to spend some time researching your patient cases, this will enable you to participate in discussions and maximize your learning opportunities.
