Small Animal Surgical Internship
Program Information
Veterinary Specialty Hospital – Sorrento Valley is a specialty referral hospital located in the coastal area of San Diego. We are located in a state-of-the-art three story, 27,000 square foot facility. Specialty equipment includes several video endoscopes, bronchoscopes, laparoscopes, two digital radiology units, on-site MRI and CT scanners, linear accelerator, digital fluoroscopy unit, two ultrasounds with color and power doppler capability, electrodiagnostic unit, cardiac telemetry units, Holter monitor, event monitor, ventilators, operating microscope, diode laser, CO2 laser, phacoemulsification unit, an in-house commercial laboratory, and full service 24 hour emergency and critical care service. Each of the six operating rooms is equipped with a multifunction bed-side monitor with capabilities for arterial blood pressure monitoring, pulse oximetry, capnography, and ECG.
Applicants should have completed a general internship and have the intent of pursuing a surgical residency. Responsibilities include teaching of the general interns, assistance in patient induction and preparation, assistance in surgery, surgical approach, wound closure, in hospital patient management, surgical rounds, and assistance with surgical reports. The surgical intern rotates through services with different surgeons in blocks and will have significant one on one training. Primary surgical responsibility is available for select cases.
The surgical intern should be comfortable with all levels of surgical patient care in both the pre and postoperative setting by the end of the program. Surgical interns are also on call nights and weekends (an average of 2 days weekly) for surgical emergencies (with the surgeons). Didactic teaching will include formal weekly topic review, daily rounds and weekly radiology rounds. Interns will also be able to attend association-sponsored Continuing Education Lectures in San Diego. Interns are expected to be highly motivated, committed, energetic individuals who desire to strengthen their education.

Additional Requirements from the Program
- An in-person or Skype/Face Time interview is required. Selected candidates will be notified about interviewing in mid January, for interviews in late Jan/early Feb.
Additional information for graduates of universities outside of the United States and Canada
- VSH/Ethos does not sponsor work visas for non-US/Canadian-citizen applicants, however non-US-citizen applicants with pre-existing work visas not dependent on the hospital will be considered.
