Small Animal Rotating Internship
Program Information
The Veterinary Specialty Hospital of San Diego – North County by Ethos is a specialty referral hospital located in inland
North County San Diego. We also have a sister hospital located in north coastal San Diego (Sorrento Valley). The VSH-NC
Internal Medicine team is composed of two full-time board-certified internists, a part-time board-certified internist, and an additional residency-trained clinician who is finalizing their board certification. We also have two full-time board-
certified surgeons (one of which is also a surgical oncologist), a board-certified emergency & critical care specialist, two board-certified neurologists, a full-time medical oncologist in the final stages of board certification, and work with our radiation oncologist team at our Sorrento Valley location. We have one full-time board-certified radiologist and two board-certified radiologists at our Sorrento Valley hospital available for wet-reads over the phone, and one full-time board-certified dermatologist. We have a full-time rehabilitation center with two certified veterinarians running the department, one that is a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation. One is chiropractic certified and both are acupuncture certified. We are actively seeking additional specialists including an anesthesiologist, an ophthalmologist, an additional radiologist, an additional criticalist, and a third surgeon to join our growing team.
Intern rotations are 3 weeks in duration and include Internal Medicine (assisting staff internists with the care of and
procedures on outpatients and hospitalized cases), Surgery (assisting staff surgeons in examinations/procedures,
anesthetic planning, surgeries, care of inpatient cases), Emergency Medicine (primary-care day emergency as well as
evenings/swing and weekends alongside staff emergency clinicians), Critical Care (managing inpatients and incoming
critical transfers), and a hybrid rotation offering time in dermatology, medical oncology, and neurology. While on
Emergency, some swing and overnight shifts are scheduled, but the intern will always be on with senior clinicians and is
never in the hospital alone.
Interns are expected to be highly motivated, committed, team-oriented, energetic individuals who desire to strengthen
their education. Applicants must apply for permanent California licensure, and because of long wait times from the
California Veterinary Medical Board, are encouraged to initiate the application process as early as October to ensure eligibility to become licensed prior to the start of the program.
