Neurology & Neurosurgery Specialty Internship
Program Description
A specialty internship in small animal neurology and neurosurgery is being offered at Massachusetts Veterinary Referral Hospital (Mass Vet) in Woburn, MA located on the north side of Boston. Neurology specialty interns have a six-day work week entirely in the neurology department. There are no emergency receiving duties outside of neurology. Candidates can expect to grow medically and surgically as all three neurologists at Mass Vet perform neurosurgery. Time is allotted for journal club, case rounds, M & M rounds, and lectures. The intern is provided with one week of vacation and one week for continuing education courses. The compensation and benefits package are highly competitive with an additional allotted CE fund.
The upcoming internship year (2022-2023) will be our 8th neurology specialty intern class. Our program has quickly become known around the country to produce excellent candidates for residency. To date, we have successfully placed 80% of candidates.
Our house officers leave the program with an excellent medical and surgical neurology knowledge base. We perform a wide variety of neurosurgical procedures including brain surgery, ventral slot, hemilaminectomy, stabilization for fractures/luxations and cervical spondylomyelopathy, dorsal and unilateral dorsal laminectomies in the cervical and lumbosacral region.
By the conclusion of the internship, our interns are well versed in approaching and closing all routine Cadaver labs are provided to practice drilling, complex approaches and spinal taps. In attempts to learn as much as we can from every case, neurology focused necropsies are performed on a regular basis, allowing the intern to perfect specimen retrieval and incorporate the gross and histopathology images into MRI and case-based rounds as part of our house officer training.
The hospital is well-equipped including an on-site 1.5T GE MRI, Toshiba Aquilion 64-slice CT scanner, digital radiography, fluoroscopy, ultrasound, endoscopy, blood bank, pulse oximetry, capnography, infusion and syringe pumps, telemetry, complete on-site diagnostic laboratory (including blood gas and coagulation analysis), blood pressure units, ventilator units (anesthesia and long-term), oxygen cages, 12-lead EKG, defibrillator, comprehensive surgical facilities, dedicated ICU with cat wards in both the ICU and general wards, and electronic medical records system. We also have electronic access to 15 veterinary journals, Plumb’s Veterinary Drugs online, and a large textbook library.
A prior general rotating internship is required for consideration for the program. Candidates wishing to later pursue a neurology residency will be given priority.
