Diagnostic Imaging and Radiology Residency
Program Information
THIS POSITION IS IN THE MATCH
The Massachusetts Veterinary Referral Hospital (Mass Vet) is offering a 3-year residency in Diagnostic Imaging. The Radiology department is staffed by 4 board-certified radiologists, six technicians, and two veterinary assistants. Mass Vet is located in the suburbs northwest of Boston and is the largest private practice emergency and specialty referral hospital in New England, seeing over 50,000 patient visits annually. We have a very busy emergency department (20+ clinicians) that generates a large imaging caseload in addition to the specialty services that include specialists in critical care (7), internal medicine (7), surgery (5), neurology (3), oncology (2), cardiology (2), ophthalmology (2), and anesthesia (2).
Our hospital is well equipped with two digital radiography suites (Canon DR plates), seven ultrasound machines (2 Canon Aplio i700s for Radiology, 2 GE Vivid e95s for Cardiology, 1 Canon Aplio a450 for Medicine, and 2 point-of-care machines for ER/ICU/Anesthesia), a 64-slice Toshiba Aquilion CT, a 1.5T Siemens MRI, and an interventional suite with fluoroscopy (OEC 9900 C-arm). The annual imaging caseload is busy (19,250+). In the last academic year, we performed over 9,700 digital radiography exams, 7,300 non-cardiac ultrasounds, 1300 MRIs, 900 CTs, and 50 fluoroscopic exams/procedures.
The department is open 7 days a week. At least one radiologist is scheduled all-day, in-hospital, on weekends, with 2-3 radiologists on weekdays. The resident is scheduled to work 5 days/week that will include weekend shifts (currently 1 Saturday or Sunday/week). A strong effort is made to schedule shifts consecutively (i.e. 2 days off in a row), which has been achieved in the past year. THE RESIDENT IS NOT CURRENTLY REQUIRED TO BE ON-CALL OR PROVIDE AFTER-HOURS COVERAGE. Currently, after-hours interpretation is provided by a teleradiology service. Mass Vet is part of Ethos Veterinary Health, which consists of 20+ hospitals nationwide. We utilize a centralized cloud-based PACS and interpretations are provided to hospitals across the Ethos network. The resident is expected to provide phone consultations (during working hours) to other Ethos clinicians when assigned to a rad reading shift, although this occurs mostly on weekends for the East region only. Greater than 95% of the reports drafted by residents are for patients seen in our hospital.
Journal Club is conducted weekly and includes articles from Veterinary Radiology & Ultrasound in addition to any articles pertaining to imaging from other veterinary journals. Known Case Conference (KCC) is convened every 2 weeks. Topic rounds occur monthly. Book/Chapter Club also occurs informally amongst the residents. Imaging residents are invited to attend weekly Neurology rounds that pertain to their professional development.
Additional training in equine radiology and nuclear medicine will be provided through an affiliation agreement with the University of Pennsylvania. The resident will spend 6 weeks (3 weeks each in their 2nd and 3rd year) at the New Bolton Center (U Penn) gaining experience in equine imaging and nuclear scintigraphy. Education of the resident will also be enhanced by in-person or virtual attendance at Brain Camp (ACVIM, MRI section), the LADIS Equine Diagnostic Imaging course, and the Nuclear Medicine short course; these CE courses will be reimbursed by the department (not from the resident’s CE stipend). A 2-week cardiology rotation is included in the program and can be completed in-house or as an approved externship. Self-study is also expected of the resident outside of clinic time, and a study plan will be developed with the resident based on the written objectives for the Preliminary exam. Six weeks of off-clinic time will be allotted for study before the Preliminary exam. Research is also an expectation of the program with the resident conducting a research project, submitting a manuscript for publication, and presenting the findings as an abstract or poster at the ACVR Annual Scientific Meeting.
NO “RETURN OF SERVICE” AGREEMENT is required despite being a “corporate” private practice residency. It is our hope that if a radiologist position is available in our network at the completion of the residency, you will CHOOSE to stay, rather than be forced to. Our in-hospital radiologists have worked for Ethos for 16, 12, 11, and 6 years respectively. For three of our radiologists, this is the only company that they have worked for since completing their residencies. We are a cohesive group that functions well together and enjoys/appreciates our technical staff and what they contribute to our team. We are seeking applicants that are not only intelligent, but motivated, and have the interpersonal skills to interact with the wide variety of clinicians that depend on the services of our department.
