Atlantic Street Veterinary Student Externships
Program Information
Student externs gain broad experience working in the Emergency department of a small, busy emergency practice. Externs shadow veterinary technicians, and emergency and critical care staff veterinarians. Externs are expected to be interactive with the staff, attend technician and DVM rounds when available, proactively discuss cases when appropriate, and actively contribute to the general workload as able. Hands on experiences are dependent on the individual, caseload, and supervising veterinarians.
- Veterinary student externships are generally 1 week at a time given our criticalist’s schedule (currently one week on and one week off).
- Externships are available to veterinary students in their 2nd, 3rd and 4th years. Scheduling priority will be given to 4th year students.
- Externs can expect to begin work by 6am, 12pm, or 4pm, depending upon the department, may be called upon to put in an 8-12 hour day. As all our hospitals are 24hr/365-day facilities, Externs will be expected to work on the weekends when on the ER service.
- Our criticalist works 5 days in a row – 12-14 hour days with a potential for an overnight shift. She is not available during the month of June.
