The VSH – SV specialty staff is composed of board certified internists, surgeons, neurologists, medical oncologists, radiologists, criticalists, radiation oncologists, dermatologists, and an ophthalmologist. In addition, we also have a full-time staff veterinary pharmacist.
VSH – Sorrento Valley is a state-of-the-art, three story, 27,000 square foot hospital. Specialty equipment includes videoendoscopes, bronchoscopes, laparoscopes, digital radiology, ultrasonography with color and power Doppler, Holter and event monitors, CT scanners, C-arm fluoroscopy, a linear accelerator, standard fluoroscopy, electrodiagnostics, cardiac telemetry, ventilator support, operating microscope, diode laser, CO2 laser, phacoemulsification unit, an in-house commercial laboratory, and full-service 24-hour emergency and critical care service. Each of the six operating rooms is equipped with a multifunction bed-side monitor with capabilities for arterial blood pressure monitoring, pulse oximetry, capnography, and ECG.
This program is designed to provide intensive clinical training in internal medicine in a private practice setting, but with a strong formal and informal didactic focus, and to prepare the specialty intern for residency training in internal medicine. As part of daily case management, the intern will gain extensive hands-on training in ultrasound, as well as familiarity with endoscopy and laparoscopy. Though this program heavily emphasizes clinical medicine, the intern will be expected to develop and hone teaching skills by acting as a mentor to rotating interns and student externs, as well as by delivering formal lectures to other house officers, specialists, and technicians. Formal grand rounds and/or mortality and morbidity presentation(s) are required.
Available/required didactics include the following: formal VSH house-officer grand rounds and M&M rounds presentations (monthly, with mandatory participation of all hospital doctors), and internal medicine-specific journal club held weekly, with VSH and UCVMC-SD internists and sporadically other specialists. Radiology rounds are held every other week. A twice weekly lecture to the rotating interns is provided by one of the hospital Diplomates (all specialties), and specialty interns are encouraged to attend relevant lectures. The internal medicine intern will provide a lecture for this series each year. Interns are expected to be highly motivated, committed, friendly, compassionate, and energetic individuals who desire to strengthen their education in internal medicine.
